I currently work as a frontend developer in a startup and now want to transition into a backend or a full-stack role as an SDE-2 in one of the top-tech companies like Uber, Google, Microsoft , Amazon and others as I feel backend has better career opportunities and growth. I have worked on frontend only in the last 3 years and so wanted to know if it will be possible for me to crack backend based SDE-2 roles in the above companies ?

People do switch but its not that easy. Anyways, my preference is to work on backend in some big tech companies as only they have that kind of scale and reach.

    • Man, if you are getting the opportunity in Sprinklr take that.

I tried doing that in FK, but that didn't work out.

Also think about scale later, your first objective should be to get your foot into the door.

If you really want to explore backend you can join a big tech and tell them you are interested in a full stack role. But you should be prepared on your ds algo skills (read problem solving)

So they don't require previous experience on building backend systems for sde-2 roles if ds/Algo skills are good ?

The easiest way is If you can learn at your current company and then switch. Other options include: join a startup, learn and then jump.
For the big techs, you can join as sde 2 in frontend and internally switch teams. Let them know in the interview that you want to get a chance to explore backend

Get a bit accustomed with ES, Kafka, System Design and DS/Algo and you are good to go. ( Assuming you know mongo and mysql*)

  • Most top tech cos wouldn't necessarily ask 'backend' questions, general ds/algo, system design only.

But honestly tbh, if your TC is legit depending on your start you are better off at your startup.
